Voldis and the melodicas is a Winnipeg-based group consisting of Kevin Forde and my bro-ther, Micheal Glucki. We did this shoot at Midcan recording studios (thanks Chris and Kelly!) as a throwback to the 'good old days' and the photographic aesthetic we all really appreciate. Two artists coming together in-studio to write and record their songs, in an all-day all-night session fueled by a creative passion.

Check out Voldis and the melodicas music online and although I'm biased (hehe) I highly recommend one of their live shows.

And if you need some great recording space definitely talk to Midcan!

Friday, October 16, 2009: a day thousands (millions?) have been waiting for for a long time.

In case you live under a rock, let me break it down for you...

Maurice Sendak wrote one of the most incredible children's books in 1963 and since then, children (and adults alike) have become so enamored with it that it has most assuredly reached "classic" status. Fast-forward to the 80's, when the first development of the film began. Fast-forward another 20-some-odd years, throw in director Spike Jonze and you've got what comes out in theatres today: a feature film adaption of one of the most loved children's stories of all time.

Whoa.

With all this hype and all this buzz, From the People wanted a piece of the pie as well! (Hey, we're excited too, okay?)

Taking inspiration from the book for many things (colours, location, wardrobe, hair, make-up) and throwing in a few small tweaks here and there (Max? A girl? Yes!) we came up with what we like to call "The Wild Things." Using motion and emotion, we gave the story depth and feeling and a real sense of connection. Pairing desaturated colours along with vibrant geometric shapes, we came up with something new; a modern way to tell the story.

"The Lost Woods"

A little while ago we went and did a photo exercise shooting with natural light, a reflector, and a tickle trunk of props and clothes. I think it's pretty difficult to turn the camera around and be the one in front of the lens, and we found that doing this helps us better understand how to communicate with people during a shoot that much better. It's a challenge trying to get the look or feel you're after, so taking on different roles along the way helps us learn all aspects of the shooting process and not just one element.

The light on this day was pretty awesome, and using a reflector to shine back onto the subject turned out to give some pretty great results. We threw a little sparkle in here and there for kicks, and a huge creature showed up at one point to help us out, too.

From The People just formed. We're two photogs and an art director who are geared up and ready to shoot crazy, fun, creative, and exciting visual images. Based out of Winnipeg, Canada and prepping to get some shoots hammered out, we're prepping our first one and pumped about it. We'll be posting the final series from each shoot here, as well as behind the scenes shots as well.

We're looking for FTP guests as well. If you're a model, hair stylist, make-up artist, costume artist, or creative person that wants to get in on the action, let us know! We want to collaborate!
